Wenge Dining Nook

We just finished a beautiful modern kitchen for an awesome couple in La Jolla. They had been searching for the right furniture for one corner of the room. Debra had originally designed this nook for an R.M Schindler home at the beach, But it didn't get built. Johan and Sevile loved it so it was modified to fit their space perfectly. It seats eight people.

Here's the model in progress showing the dining setup. Also shown is the leather cover and "buttons" along the edge of the table that I'll post pictures of at a later date, when the upholstery is done.

And the finished pieces without the cushions. All the seating doubles as storage and the section along the back wall is a computer desk.

Originally designed to have a dark gloss top, the client wanted a deep green, so maple plywood becomes 2 inches of emerald green glass.

The cabinets are walnut with ebonized lyptus for the legs

Almost! Decided to stick with the black and bare metal thing on the KZ. Just finished redoing all the wiring. Gonna throw a new stator in this weekend and if that solves the low voltage problem, IT'S DONE.........

Can I Not Get A Witness

I'm pretty pleased with the veneer work on this table. Debra figured out a great way of slicing all the pie shaped pieces for the top using the Festool plunge saw. The whole thing went together real easy, perfect grain matching all the way around. The finish is another story... I'm doing a full fill high gloss polished finish. After about 15 coats and a couple weeks of cure time I hit it with 800 grit sandpaper to smooth it out. Immediately it starts to get witness lines everywhere. You can see them in the photo below, the hazy squiggly shapes all over the top. This happens when the individual coats of finish sit on top of each other instead of melting together to make on thick coat. The hazy lines are where I sanded through one coat and hit another. The more you sand, the bigger they get.. I've done plenty of polished finishes and have never had this happen. I may have waited too long between coats, or something was up with the finish product. In any case, there's only one way out from here, sand all the finish off and start over...........

The 62 Fender Bassman Amp, 60 watts of buttery tone, is Known as one of the all time great GUITAR amps. It was a modified Bassman that turned into the first Marshall. I myself used one for years as my main guitar amp. But I'm here to tell you, there is no better BASS amp for making records or doing small clubs. I think it's the 12" speakers, they just go to tape so F'n smooth. If you need more power for bigger rooms get a Bassman 135 head. 135 watts of buttery rumble.

Well, as usual,in the mad dash to get the Rose Myrtle table finished and delivered, We didn't get any photos. Liz snapped a shot with her Iphone and sent it over. I'll get some more pics in a couple weeks when we photograph the rest of the pieces we did for her.

We're doing what is called a " Live Edge" on this table. We remove the loose bark exposing the sap wood which is unbelievable on this piece. The outside 2-3 inches has incredible marbling, with colors ranging from cream to black.

We removed quite a bit of material off the bottom of our Myrtle table top getting it flat, must have released some pressure in the wood. Came in on thursday and found a slight cupping across the width. Solution, pile a bunch of heavy crap on top to hold it flat and let it sit awhile. Next week we'll send it through the wide belt sander, a couple passes on each side should make it dead flat.

The 77KZ1000 project is coming along. The black & white tank is a loaner from a great friend and local KZ guru Sander Knook. Hopefully Ruben will have the paint job done in time for The Bash

After Cleaning up the edges and joining the two pieces, we use a couple straight rails and the Festool router in a sled to gradually flatten the surface.
Here it is all cleaned up.

One of our Favorite clients asked us to build her a dining table for her newly remodeled home in Carlsbad. Beautifully designed by Design Michael Paul Crosby in San Diego. She was inspired by the Walnut slab cocktail table that we did for her so Debra and I took her to Tropical Exotic Hardwoods to look at some bookmatched sets. She decided to take a couple slabs of Tasmanian Rose Myrtle home for dinner.
